The Birdsell Mansion is a historic structure built in 1898 for Joseph Benjamin Birdsell and Olive Tarbell Birdsell’s family. It later became an office building, and is now evolving into an arts and community center for downtown South Bend, Indiana. Joseph Benjamin Birdsell is one of the sons of John Comly Birdsell, inventor of the Birdsell Clover Huller. John Comly ("J.C.") founded what became the Birdsell Manufacturing Company in South Bend. In 1897, Joseph Benjamin Birdsell and Olive Tarbell Birdsell purchased a half-acre empty lot (known as Bank Out Lot 15) for $8,800 (approximately $244,000 in today’s currency).〔“Historic Currency Conversions.” Accessed November 13, 2014. http://futureboy.homeip.net/fsp/dollar.fsp?quantity=8800¤cy=dollars&fromYear=1897.〕 By 1899, construction was completed and the family was able to move in. The home is a modified Queen-Anne style designed by the firm Parker and Austin. Wilson Parker worked for the McKim, Meade, and White firm, whose most famous works include New York’s original Pennsylvania Station, and the renovated West and East wings of the White House. Joseph B. Birdsell lived in the mansion until his death in September 1906. In 1960, attorney F. Jay Nimtz opened a law practice in the Birdsell Mansion. He remained in the mansion for thirty years until his death on December 6, 1990. South Bend business person Leo Travino bought the home a few years later and renovated it for continued use as an office space. The home held a day care center on the second floor until some time in the early 2000s, as well. Beginning in 2014, the Mansion is used as a community space for art, music, and various other interests in the South Bend community under the moniker (The Birdsell Project ) (). == Sources == Birdsell, Roger. “Birdsell: The Invention, The Family, The Company.” Accessed November 14, 2014. http://centerforhistory.org/learn-history/business-history/birdsell-clover-huller-company. “Biographical Directory of the United States Congress, F.
